Kerala Backwaters

The Kerala Backwaters are a labyrinth of freshwater canals, rivers, lakes, lagoons and islands stretching almost the entire length of the state. 38 rivers feed nearly 1000 km of interconnected waterways. This unique ecosystem is home to large numbers of birds and aquatic creatures including rare otters and turtles.
The best way to see the backwaters is by houseboat. These former grain barges are abundant and can be privately hired for as little as £50 per day. Most have been custom built in the time honoured thatched style. Prices include 5 star interiors, AC bedrooms and on-board chef with all meals included.
Fishing and growing rice are still the main industries here. The quaint villages and quiet way of life make for the perfect wind down after Southern India’s hot and dusty cities.
